Question about Collaborative Project

When we turn in our documents tomorrow, do you want the proposal? And also, is the proposal included when we turn in the final draft of everything?

Monday, June 18, 2007

End-of-semester Deadlines

OK, as promised, here are the deadlines for the rest of the semester:

  • Today (6/17) Job Search Documents including two versions of your resume, one letter asking for an advice and information interview, and one thank you note. (You can type it as a word document so you can attach it, but when you do it "for real" you should hand write it.)

  • Tomorrow (6/18) Final draft of Project 1 (Technical Writing in your field)

  • Wednesday (6/19) Draft of all Project #3 (Collaborative Project) Documents (not the cover memo, unless you want comments on it as well.)

  • Next Tuesday (6/26) Final Draft of Project #3 (Collaborative Project) including the documents you proposed, plus a cover memo as discussed in class. NOTE: even though your project and your partner's project will be the same, each person should submit his/her own. That way if someone can't get theirs in, you are covered. Also, your cover memos can be done collaboratively or individually--your choice.

  • Next Tuesday (6/26) Final draft of Job Search documents
All of these should be submitted as email attachments.

I hope this helps. Remember, if you have questions, post them here. I'll try to respond more quickly as it is the end of the semester.

RESPONSE TO KIM'S RESUMES AND LETTERS

I think that you did a very good job with your request and thank you letters. It was good that you specified that you were not trying to get a job but that you just wanted information on a job in the field. I think that your resumes were good too but you might want to put the headings of the categories in bold or capital letters to make them stand out more. Also I was a little confused on the two different addresses on the different resumes. The home one was put on one and it said school in parenthesis but, there was no school address listed. I especially liked how you kept the resumes short and to the point and did not put a lot of “fluff” in them.

Question about Job search documents due tomorrow

Are we supposed to email you the job search documents due tomorrow?

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Response to Emmanuel

Your resume and letters were very good. The only thing that I was questioning was the informality of the letters. I don't really know if they're supposed to be formal or not? If they are, then it might be better to end the letters with something other than 'thanks'. That was the only that really saw for improvement. Other than that, they are direct and contain all the necessary information. Good job!

Response To Matt

I think the formatting of your resumes are very good and professional. It is good that you have some experience in your field already. In your contact letter make sure you look over some of the spelling. Other than that everything looks good in your letters and resumes.

Question for T.F.

I am meeting with my Interior Designer on Tuesday morning for my job search meeting. I am leaving the country immediately after my meeting. Is there anything that I will need to turn in as far as the meeting goes? Or anything after that (final project?)?

Response to Lindsay

Your letters are very professional & well spoken. The only thing I saw was that in the second letter you have exceeding & I think it should be exceeded. Otherwise, your letters are awesome!

Response to Hilary's resume and letter

I thought that your resume was good, but when you get to the letters there are a few problems that I noticed. There are a few words that don't have spaces in between them and I think that you should write out what HGTC is. You also forgot to add your disclaimer in the advice letter. I think that you did a great job.

Our House sounds like a great organization. I'm not sure what your plan is to help them out, but the idea of the organization is something that is definitely needed. Do those places set up centers where people can bring their kids? Or is it more of a home-run business?

Grades for 1st Drafts of Project #1

If you turned in a first draft of project #1, your grade is now posted on BlackBoard, and you should have received comments from me to help you revise. Obviously, my comments are coming to you a bit late. What we're going to do is talk a bit about the projects today and let you have the opportunity to ask questions, then you can have time to revise again.

To remind you of the process: **When you revise, your new grade **REPLACES** your draft grade. My intent is to reward you for what you learn, not penalize you for where you start out, so if your grade is not what you want (and it usually isn't) you get to work on it and make it what you want.

I mentioned this at the beginning of class, but it usually bears repeating after the first grades are posted: I understand that this course has different writing demands than most of your courses. You have to learn a completely different skillset, and you have to figure things out on your own. That is why we have the drafting system--so that you get to take a stab at it, then get feedback, then try again. (Better to do that here, in class, than on your job.)

If you have questions, let me know. See you in just a bit.

Response to Kristin and Kim

I think that the non-profit AIDS organization is a great choice for this project. I like that it is managed by college students and professors. I think that will help to reach out to a broad range of students. I'm sure you both can give great ideas just by being college students yourself. Were you planning on designing a website? Or other forms of advertisement for this organization? Also, bringing celebrities in is always great for awareness. I enjoyed learning about this particular non-profit organization and I look forward to seeing the success that comes from this project!

Question?

Dr. F.

I was just wondering if you wanted us to post our resume on the webblog just like this question or if you wanted us to email them to you?

Thank you

Explanation

Hey everyone.

I am very sorry about not being as responsive as I usually am. Rather than explain in detail, I'm just going to show you, and ask for your understanding.

I promise that I'm working on getting caught up and that I'll find ways of giving you adequate feedback and opportunities for revision. Unfortunately, this is what I've been dealing with since late Tuesday night (early Wednesday morning.)

Luckily, this wasn't my only computer, and I didn't lose anything that you sent me. It's just taking a while for me to get things together.

As I said in the email, no one was hurt, which was a good thing. The stuff I had in the house did not fare as well, but it is only stuff, and can be replaced.

Response to Hilary and Lindsay

I read the brief history posted by them and it sounds great that they want to help out the habitat for humanity. They are a really great organization. I think that they are pretty well known and you should not have any problems getting information on them. Since I don’t exactly know what your plan is I cant really point out any thing I could see as a possible pitfall, but I think you will have enough information and be able to do a good job.

About revision of Project 1

Hello all,

Things are starting to get back to normal here, so I'm working on your papers. I wanted to let you know what I'm going to do with your first projects--Tech writing in your field.

Since I wasn't able to provide feedback to your first drafts yet, what I'm going to do is give you credit for turning them in, but provide feedback for your second drafts and allow you to revise and turn them in again later this week if you choose. So turn in your revisions today as scheduled, and if you get a grade you're happy with on the draft you turn in today, fine; If you want to revise, that is also fine, and your first grade will be replaced with the grade you earn on the revision. That way, if you didn't end up doing a second draft (because you didn't get my feedback yet) you can still revised based on feedback (with no penalty) or, if you just did an excellent revision on your own, you can now be done. That seems fairest, since I wasn't able to get them back yet. (I'm going to post my reason for that in just a bit, after I work up to looking at the pictures.)

Response to Collaborative Projects

The organizations that everyone seems to be working with all seem to be very interesting and very worthwhile. It is also interesting to see that there is a broad range of organizations that work with all types of individuals who are in need. The biggest thing to remember when working with non-profit organizations is that the work that is done by the students will probably be used by the organizations and needs to be professional quality. I have worked with the Make-A-Wish foundation before and they look to a lot of businesses for donations that make their work possible. It is important that any material used by the organizations look professional because these materials are going to be viewed by professionals. If material is not professional looking these people may not take the organization seriously.

Response to Not For Profit post

I find it great that you ladies want to help out an organization that is for the awareness of AIDs among college students. I actually never heard of them either being from Atlanta myself. Hopefully they were easy to get in touch with and you were able to find a lot of useful information about them. What exactly will you ladies be doing with them?

Response To Emanuel and Matt

I think that Our House sounds like a wonderful organization, but a potential problem that occurred to me is that since their services are directed towards homeless individuals, they will be harder to reach. They most likely do not have daily access to the internet, TV, or something like that that advertising counts on. Unless your challenge is to get donations, volunteers, or something in that realm I could see this being very challenging. The only way to solve this would be to create a poster or billboard.

Green light on proposals

Greetings,

I just wanted to post a quick note to let you know that all the proposals I've seen on the weblog and gotten via email seem viable, with the modifications that I've posted/sent. Remember that if you have questions, post them here so I can answer here and everyone can benefit from the information. Thank you.

History of Our House by Emmanuel and Matt

Our House was founded in 1988 by local citizens of Decatur, Georgia who recognized that there was a lack of affordable childcare that kept many families from overcoming homelessness.

The founders of Our House wanted to make it a place where parents could leave their children for free while they go seek employment or permanent housing knowing that their children would be in a safe and loving place. Over the years though Our House has evolved into a place that give valuable supportive services for entire families.

Our House was the first homeless-specific childcare center to receive accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Not for profit Organization summary

Kristin and Kim

The not for profit organization that Kim and I are doing is AIDS-next. AIDS next is an organization created by four Emory University students along with the support of the Emory student government and three Emory professors. The organization was created initially with the purpose to host an event taking place at the HiFi Buys Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA. This event called "classroom on the quad" is something that the Emory student government puts on every year. The event hoped to enhance college students awareness of aids by bring speaker such as Magic Johnson and John Mayer. Emory university has a history of aids research so this organization was just another step in their continued fight against aids. Today the organization is focusing on planning an event that can reah a broad range of college students.

Response to Technical Writing Posts

Everyone seems to agree, good technical writing skills are important to almost every profession, but the application is significantly different for each and every situation. The differences in the definitions of technical writing reflect the vast area covered by this field. Technical writing is involved in almost every imaginable field, because clear communication is essential to success all facets of the professional world.

4 Articles

These four articles defined technical writing a little more clearly by talking about specific applications. The first three dealt specifically with the types of activities in which technical writers are involved in typical work settings. It is clear that there are many places for the skills of technical writers and there will be even more as communication and technology continue to develop.

It made me realize how many ways I already apply technical writing in my job. It also made me hope I can continue to develop my skills to communicate even more efficiently. The last article gave a few pointers towards improvement. I hope I will surprise my co-workers with some new tricks by the end of this course.

Org. History: Hilary & Lindsay

Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit service organization that focuses on building and rebuilding homes for the underprivileged that otherwise may not have a place to live. Since it was founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built and rebuilt over 200,000 houses.
The idea for Habitat for Humanity was born in a small Christian farming town in Georgia. Two people, Clarence Jordan and Linda Fuller, worked together with families to build homes from the ground up. In order to fund these projects, the families that inhabited the houses were put on payment plans to cover only the expense incurred during the building process (no labor charges). Families are also offered no interest loans and donations of supporters.

Question about Project 1

For the references used in my paper, should I just make a list of the references I used on a page or do I have to directly cite where I used a source in my paper?

Response to Hilary/Lindsay, Emmanuel/Matt, Brandon/Amanda...posts on Technical Writing

After I read the responses about technical writing that three pairs of my classmates wrote I noticed several similarities between their responses. First off everyone said something about technical writing and communication which I think was a very important point to mention. Technical writing helps people to communicate with their audience, whoever their audience may be. The importance of clear communication in technical writing is something that me and my partner found as well when we were defining technical writing together.

Another similarity that I found between my classmates postings was notion that technical writing is job specific. This means that the technical writing you do will depend on the job that you have. This does not mean however that some of the techniques will not be the same from job to job because they will be.I think it was Amanda/Brandon who mentioned this point which is very important.

Response to collaborative posts: Everyone

It was very interesting to read everyone's collaborative posts and to see the different things that they included in their definition. I found it very interesting that some of the posts involved things that were useful to the authors as far as their career paths were concerned. I know that in Brandon and my post social work was mentioned which is the career path that I have chosen and in a few other posts I noticed other careers mentioned that I had heard mentioned before. Everyone seems to acknowledge that technical writing is different for different careers but that many things may be important to all fields.

Response to Articles

The first article was mainly about technical writing in the field of technology. It discussed the many different needs of the field for certain types of writing. I am not entering a field that deals with technology so this article really did not apply to me even though it was interesting to see that there is a need for these things in the field. When I consider careers that are heavily based in technology I usually assume that there is no need for technical writing, but apparently there is.

The second article was about many different types of writers that are present in the professional world. This article discussed the many different types and pointed out what qualifications were needed and what the job actually dealt with. I was very surprised to find out that there is actually a profession know as "technical writer"! Most of these careers were communications oriented although there was a segment that discussed writing in the medical field. Since I am going to be working either as a counselor of as some sort of case worker many of the things that I may have to deal with could be the types of research writing that were discussed in this article.

The third article had to do with technical communications and exactly what that means on a professional level. The part of this article that was the most relevant to my field is conducting internal training for an organization. There will probably come a time in my career when I will be responsible for the training of another person and the use of written guides will probably be employed.

The fourth article dealt with technical writing and how to improve your individual technical writing for the field you anticipate entering. One thing that I found useful was the section on jargon and how it should be used for different audiences. When I am writing for my career it is important that I use terms that will be understood by the different audiences. When I am writing for colleagues it would be appropriate to use psychological or even psychiatric terms whereas if I was writing for a patient or someone outside of the profession it might be helpful to explain certain terms or to use a description that would be easily understood.

Queston???

Dr. F,

i was wondering if it is okay with you to push the post time from 7:00 back to around 10:00 for the entire class.

Thank you

Response to Classmates' posts

I read all of the definitions for technical writing that everyone has posted. I found it interesting that they all agree that technical writing is different for everyone depending on their profession. I feel that everyone did a good job of encompassing the broad spectrum considering that pretty much everyone in this class is from a different major. I also feel that even though we are all from different majors and do all kinds of technical writing we also share a lot of very common technical writing skills.

Response to Emmanuel & Matt; Brandon & Amanda:

What I liked most about their definition of technical writing was that they defined it as writing that exists in a different language according to the job. It is most definitely true & it’s something you don’t think about when you first think of technical writing.

I like that Brandon & Amanda pointed out that technical writing involves learning to adapt to a certain type of writing style, defined by each job.

Responding to Technical writing by Emmanuel & Matt, Brandon & Amanda, and Hilary & Lindsay

It seems to be a common thread that technical writing is a form of communication in a particular format designed for a specific audience. I think that all three of these pairs had very similar definitions of technical writing that I cannot really disagree with, except I do not think that technical writing is very different in every field. I think that based on the posts that I have read that all the fields have more in common with communication concerns than they do differences. All of these fields involve directions, memos, letters, and emails among many other components.
