Progress on Individual Project
My individual project frist draft went fairly well. I proposed that the Civil Engineering department create a course in technical writing specific to Civil Engineers. I based this fact on my experience in the workplace, and in the class that is currently offered. I also used some information from one of the articles on Dr. Fishman's website and my interview to support my proposal. I also did some research, and found that Utah State University already has a class similar to the one I proposed. In order to propel Clemson higher as an engineering school and into the top 20, we need to be a model school to set a standard by adding this course.
I broke my paper into five sections. I started with a broad overview, then a background, and purpose statement. I also had a section for course requirements, outcomes, my experience, and conclusions. In the section about the course requirements I went into a detailed look at the kinds if projects students would be involved with. The individual project involved working with a contact person to submit a project proposal for an upcoming project. Then the student would have to sell the proposal to the class. The group project worked with creating contracts, feasibility studies, and assessment reports and then presenting the material in a business meeting format. The class also includes presentations by experienced engineers, a trip to the Michelin Career Center, and other documents used in a job search. I learned a great deal about the types of documents Civil Engineers use, and how to submit a proposal within a constrained amount of time.
