Dear Ms. Hardin,
I am currently a Senior Graphic Communications Major preparing for a career in magazine layout design and seek advice from a professional in the industry. I assure you this is not an attempt at acquiring a job from your establishment, but rather a request for direction from you.
I would appreciate if you would look over my materials and advise me on how I may continue to prepare. Some of the issues I need to resolve are as follows:
What can I do to put myself ahead of other candidates in the industry?
What courses are critical to the success of those entering the field?
How should I position myself and my work when looking for a job?
While I would value meeting with you to present my portfolio, the nature of this assignment prohibits me from doing so. Receiving your feedback promptly is vital to my success in properly preparing for a magazine design career.
Thanks you for your help.
Sincerely,
Pamela Pryor

Dear Pam,
The questions you've identified are good ones, but this is probably too much for a letter. (Busy people often quit reading if the letter is too long.) Can you encapsulate the kind of things you want to know and then simply write one sentence that indicates that kind of thing you'll be asking in the interveiw? I think you'll have better success. (I *do* like the approach.)
