Dear Mr. Werts:

I am a senior in Civil Engineering at Clemson University. As I prepare for graduation, I am very interested in the skills required for a Civil Engineer in the working world. Your background in Civil Engineering has provided you with much of the knowledge essential to a successful Civil Engineering career. I am contacting you in hopes that you will share some of your knowledge of these necessary skills with me so that I might better prepare myself for my job search. It is my goal to learn what skills Civil Engineers, like you, find essential for someone applying for a job. I am not asking for a job or for a recommendation for a job. I am just requesting a short meeting with you in order to discuss these skills. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting with you soon.

Sincerely,

Beth Werts
Senior Civil Engineering Student
Clemson University

Beth, remind me of the relationship between you and this person? Is it your dad? Regardless of the relationship, aknowledge it but explain that you are contacting them more professionally because you have a professional purpose . . . then go on as in the example. (You may tell them, when you see them, that you need the practice for when you move on to strangers :-).
