Responses to the collaborative definitions of technical writing
After reading each partner's collaborative definitions, I found all had something noteworthy to contribute. I was impressed how Amanda, Kawauna, and Robin pointed out that technical writing serves as a medium to allow people to relate. I never thought about technical writing possessing the ability to bring people together, but I after reading their description, I see how this could be true. Ashley and Jason made a good point when they explained that technical writing was not limited to one specific type of format, but rather could be communicated in many different ways. Shayaa and Rodney expanded this point listing specific formats like proposals, letters, resumes, manuals, and web sites. I realized that as long as the point reaches the audience as it was originally intended, the format is of least significance. Being a graphic design major, I especially liked how Kinsey and Bobby incorporated the fact that technical writing was not limited only to the written word, but many times charts, graphs, pictures, and other tools. My future career is dependent on the need for these visual tools to enhance the clarity of the written word. Elizabeth and Stephen not only defined technical writing, but specifically tied it into their careers, which I found interesting and informative. Likewise, Hayden and Jason expanded the definition they devised to include their careers. I enjoyed seeing how technical writing functioned in the different professions. Although all of the definitions contained valuable information, I found the most notable piece of information in the definition composed by Venable, Hallums, and Payne. They mentioned that any person writing about a certain topic in a specific field is considered a technical writer using technical communication as their method of transferring information. Through their use of the word, any, I finally realized that I too am a technical writer. However skilled I may be, I can still incorporate the definition of technical writing to include myself.
