Response to 4 Readings

The first article "What is communication" was interesting because not only did it define communication in a way that was understanding, it also broke communication down into three different parts: technical, newsmedia, and interpersonal. It explained technical as being communication that gave instructions and procedures. This type of communication would be useful in my future profession (as a teacher) because it's important to make parents/guardians aware of the procedures in the classroom. It's very important that they know what is going on in the classroom and with their child. The article explained newsmedia communication to be radio, tv, and print that gives general information and human interest stories to the public. Lastly, the article explained interpersonal communication to be communication that connects with others. I feel that this type of communication will be most useful in my future profession because I will have to connect with students and parents/guardians and communicate my thoughts and feelings. The second article "Department of Labor" breaks down what technical writers do and focuses more on the qualifications of the writers. I felt that this article was the least useful in my profession because it seemed to me to relate more to individuals who were in the journalism or possibly English fields, however when you're in the education field it never hurts to learn about other professions and gain as much knowledge as you can. The third article "Technical Communication" basically gives an overview of what technical writers do and the responsibilities they have. Like the second article, this one didn't relate to my profession directly but is useful information to know. The powerpoint slide was interesting to me because it was unique from the other articles. I liked the way the information was organized into the slides. It basically described what writers do, the practical needs of technical writing, and the elements of documents. Although I felt the first article was most useful to my profession, all the articles were good to read so that I could gain more information about the subject. This information will be useful in my future profession because I will be able to explain to my students what writers do and how newspapers and magazines operate.
