Response to 4 Readings
After reading the four indicated passages, I feel that graphics and visual elements hold a small but important role in technical communication. Each passage made references and had information pertaining to graphics, images, and design, which are key components in the line of work I hope to be doing in the future. Since each reading had points of interest in graphic related fields, technical writing encompasses more graphics than I originally thought.
The first reading, “What is Communication?,” had the most concentrated information on something that I would anticipate doing in my future career. The source says that people “communicate with words and with pictures”. Communicating through images and words, especially images, is graphic communications. The passage was located on the Society for Technical Communication’s website. The Society of Technical Communications includes typical professions such as writers. They surprising also included illustrators and graphic designers. These are jobs that graphic communicators are trained to hold. The article continues to define communication differently as “the process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior”. Symbols and signs can be another visual form of communication.
The Department of Labor provided an insight into technical writing that the other sources did not address. This was the idea of placing the words and images together in layouts. The nature of the work that technical writers do is mostly developing materials and writing work. But it caught my eye that they “also may assist in layout work”. A layout artist is a possible job for me in the future. Technical writers work with layout artists and designers. The passage points out the technical writers “oversee the preparation of illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and charts”. Training and other qualifications that are helpful is the knowledge of electronic publishing. Newspapers and magazines require writers and editors to be knowledgeable in the computer software used to combine text with graphics. Layout software knowledge and application is a large emphasis of class work, and is something I wish to use in the future.
Although the shortest passage of the four, “Technical Communication” still points out a graphic element used in technical communication. The source lists what responsibilities technical communicators can have. First on the list is to design web sites and produce videos for organizations and businesses. Design is an aspect anticipated to be involved in a future career.
The PowerPoint presentation had the least information about the graphic and visual roles that are used in technical writing and communication. It did mention that a hindrance in technical writing was a lack of visual aids when needed. It explained that visuals are important to help clarify and understand ideas. A picture is worth a thousand words.
