Response to 4 Readings

The first reading, “What is Communication?,” explains that technical writing is most used in explaining technology. This definition relates to writing about technical subjects that scientists and medical researchers would relate closely with or explaining something in a manual. In my future career, I would expect to use technical writing most closely related to explaining the technical specifications and subjects to people unfamiliar with them. I would need to explain technical terms in a language simple enough for them to follow.

The second reading from The Department of Labor also describes technical writing as giving a set of instructions, such as operating and assembly manuals. It then refers to technical writing as written interpretations of engineering and design specifications. I plan to use these interpretations of engineering and design specifications quite often in my career.

The third reading, “Technical Communication,” defines technical writing as conveying scientific information to a variety of audiences. They go on to say that technical writing may be in the form of computer documentation, web sites, manuals, etc. This third reading best describes technical writing as writing with the use of technology. Most of my career writing will be typed on a computer; however, I do not expect much of it to be published on a computer. Therefore, my career will not overlap with this description quite as much as with some of the other readings.

The fourth reading, “Defining Technical Writing,” describes technical writing as being practical, professional, and specific to desired information. It explains that effective technical writing is achieved when the content is relevant, organized, and formatted to be the most accessible for the reader. I think that my career will reflect this definition the most. I know already that my writing must be professional and at the same time, concise to the topic in discussion. It must be formatted professionally and the content must be very organized.
