Response to the 4 readings
After reading each of the 4 articles on technical writing, I found that each one says about the same thing. One difference was that some of the articles mentioned more details on the subject than did some of the others.
For the first article, “What is Communication?” there were two main things that were mentioned that relate to technical writing I see myself doing. The two things are work in high technology, helping software and hardware companies develop products that are easy for people to use and develop Internet and intranet sites, finding ways to help people get to the information they need quickly and giving them that information in ways that they can easily understand.
For the second article, “Department of Labor” there was a few things mentioned that apply to technical writing that I see myself doing. The things are prepare operating and maintenance manuals, work with engineers on technical subject matters to prepare written interpretations of engineering and design specifications and other information for a general readership, and plan and edit technical materials.
For the third article, “Technical Communication” there was a great definition that was given that applies to my future career. The definition is as follows:
“Technical communicators make scientific, technical, and practical knowledge available to a variety of audiences in many kinds of media (print, video, multimedia, and web media). They also manage communication processes within organizations and represent those organizations to the wider public in newsletters, brochures, and web sites.”
The last article, “Defining Technical Writing” went more into the topic than any of the other articles. This article gave a good definition that relates to technical writing in my career. The definition says that, “Technical communicators create (analyze), locate (research), and distribute (prepare written documents for workplace audiences) information within their organization.”
All of the articles seem to apply that within my field I will do writing based on the technology being used or created. These writings will help others to understand how to use the technology. The writings will be done in various formats that will allow users to have the ability to gain the information in the way that is most convenient to them.
