Technical Writing

This course has been extremely beneficial in helpiung me hone my technical writing abilities. The projects in this class will enhance your performance when you enter into your chosen profession. The assignments are all real world scenarios that you may find quite valuable in the future. As the assignments are real world scenarios, so too, are the deadlines. For this reason it is important to not fall behind. You will rely heavily on your group associates in completing the activities. So it is esential that you remain in continuous communication with your partners.
The value created by this course lies in its ability to convey to the students their conversational and written requirements to ensure communication between both technical and non-technical personnel. Take-aways, while varying by individual, should be enhanced for future self-production.

ENGL 314 ADVISE

I have taken several online classes, but this was the first one that required meetings at a certain time every week. It was a challenge because I often had to work while I was in the class, but I found the virtual classroom meetings very helpful for answering questions.

As others have said, the class is fast-paced...on-line definitely doesn't mean easy! It is extremely easy to fall behind. Check the syllabus for assignments and due dates and keep up with them.

The most challenging project is the collaborative project and it's hard to pick a partner when you don't know any of the people, but it is important to get a partner and come up with a client quickly. The longer it takes to get those two things, the farther behind you'll get!

Good luck!

Advice to Students

Though this class was very fast paced, I did enjoy the on-line expeience. I personally like having online classes. I work a very hectic schedule and it is much easier for me to run to a computer and get my assignments and do my work all at the same time, rather than to travel to and from classes and sit in class for hours at the time.

Online programs and virtual universities are an answer to adult students who are very busy with their lives in their careers and family life and cannot or will not attend a traditional university that holds sessions in a classroom on a campus, most often during the daytime hours when adult students are at work. However, online classes and online programs take more effort than anticipated by many students since preparation is essential, computer skills are required, and there are many obstacles that may hinder a student new to educational technology.

In this class, we had three major assignments. I recommend getting on top of these assignments as soon as possible. You think there is time just to do the week to week assignments, but there is not especially if you work as well.

Advice for future students

My advice for students enrolled in English 314 is to be aware of all the assignments and the due dates. It is a fast-paced course which involves a lot of planning and communication with not only the professor but also classmates. After completing the course you will be able to write a variety of documents such as memos and resumes. I felt as though this class helped me significantly in getting more involved with my future career. Having to interview a professional in my field not only got me to see a better picture of what type of job I could be pursuing in the future but I also was able to compile a list of contacts whom I met with, where I then might be able to use those contacts while looking for jobs after graduation. Even though this course requires a lot of time and effort during the summer, I am glad that I was able to learn a great deal especially with figuring out what direction I want to head with my career.

Advice for students

Future English 314 students:

I think that one of the most important things to keep in mind about this class is that it has a very fast pace. In order to do well in this class you need to keep track of all the assignments given during the week, or else you will start to fall behind, much like I did. This class does give you the opportunity to catch up and get some easy credit points with the various small postings, but the 3 'big' projects will sneak up on you faster than you know it, so always try to stay ahead of the curve.

As far as the material in the class, don't take for granted the chances you have to further your career in this class. English 314 gives you opportunities to practice interviews, resumes, and other aspects of real life jobs that can only be experimented in this class. That experience of beginning your search for a job is invaluable and you will be much more well off if you take advantage of the instruction given to you. Good luck.

Advice for future ENGL 314 students

Hello English 314 Technical Writing Students! In preparation for this course, you will need to keep in mind that this is a fast passed learning environment. With that in mind, responsibility, reading and reacting is what you will need to incorporate with Technical Writing.
First, it is your responsibility for the amount of work that will be covered and to complete all assignments in an orderly and timely manner. This class is just like if you were writing in the workplace.
Next, it's time for reading. Reading the syllabus, assignments, posts, and class online meeting and your handbook are crucical for survival in this course. Make sure that keep clear and concise notes for yourself and if nessecary, make yourself a calendar for projects and posts. This is very important as the class draws to an end, because it will get hectic, but it's not too bad.
Lastly, react! Respond to the web blogs, and ask questions. Sometimes the best learning tool is by asking questions, for clarity and so forth. Please take this class seriously, as you can benefit greatly from the activities and through this technological class setup. You can expect to have collaborative assignments and projects as well as your own work to consider. Time will go by quickly so the sooner you set yourself up for success, the better the classes evolution will be. Good luck to you all!

Hello all,

I got projects and revisions from all of you plus papers from my other class, and as a result, my email box was full for a while (from about 1 am to about 6 am.) I've cleared some room, so if you weren't able to get something to me last night, please send again. Thanks.

Mrs Fishman

I have tried at least 8 times between last night and this morning to email you my groups project. I even tried from a different email address. Each time it is returned undeliverable. Is there someting wrong with your email? I sent the same documents to myself and it worked... Help!

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to meet with me. I did not realize the interview process can be so involved, so I thank you for taking it seriously. I definitely learned a lot more about the process of finding a job after this interview, and the confidence and skills I have attained are invaluable in my future job searches. I have learned that many architecture firms do look for applicants who have experience in AutoCAD, so to further my knowledge in that particular computer skill will definitely help me when I actually look for the job within the next year. I also enjoyed learning about your company in that they focus more on the technical side of the field and not so much on the design aspect, so my dilemma is to find a firm in the future that fits with what I want to focus on in my career. Again, thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Matthew Belt

Dear Mr. Robert Evans,

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me. The advice you gave me about finding a specific area in which I am interested in selling pharmaceuticals is extremely important. When you also explained how important it is to pick a specific area so that I am not over worked and that I actually get time with the doctors was especially helpful.
